Nikita Prokhorov is an award-winning lettering artist, graphic designer, and educator based in New York City and Connecticut. He specializes in typography and has clients ranging from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies.
An ambigram expert and author, Nikita’s work has been featured in books and earned industry recognition. He was also a keynote speaker at the 2019 Typism Conference and led workshops at universities and AIGA events. Outside of design, he enjoys writing puns, travelling, skydiving, scuba diving, tennis, and AC/DC.
What initially inspired you to start lettering, and how did you discover your passion for it?
Initially, my passion for lettering was preceded by my introduction to ambigrams. When I first encountered ambigrams and attempted to draw them, I realized that I lacked the typographic knowledge and experience to draw lettering.
As a designer, I’ve worked with typography before in the context of logos/packaging design/editorial layouts/etc., but I never had the need to draw custom letters.
When I realized the missing link, I began to study custom lettering and typography in-depth, and as a bonus, I was able to call myself both a lettering artist AND an ambigram designer! However, the learning process is never over for me—I am still learning.
What advice would you give to aspiring lettering artists who are just starting and seeking inspiration?
My biggest piece of advice is to do some research and then just start lettering.
As far as research goes, there are many (almost too many!) resources available, from in-person to online workshops, as well as researching other lettering artists and looking at their portfolio.
Once you have a good broad overview of lettering as an art form, just start! Develop the basic foundational process for yourself and how you approach lettering.
Start small. Write short words and focus on aesthetic consistency.
Build off existing lettering. If you see a lettering piece that uses (for example) 20 different letters out of the 26-letter Roman alphabet, draw the other six letters using a similar style, just for practice. Then, take that style and apply it to a new word or phrase. Refine it, don’t perfect it. Step and repeat, with a completely different aesthetic.
Explore different tools to see what you’re comfortable with—pencil & paper, iPad & some drawing apps (Procreate is a great start).
Take some courses in calligraphy, brush lettering, script lettering, etc.
Start with broad strokes (pun intended) and then narrow down to lettering aesthetics that truly speak to you.
Can you describe your process for developing and refining a new lettering style or project?
I am more old school, so for me, once I select a word/phrase, it’s an endless amount of sketching with pencils, sharpies, and many pieces of tracing paper.
There is nothing wrong with sketching digitally in Procreate or any other drawing app, but that’s not where my comfort zone is. I love paper and the tactile feel of a drawing tool.
Suppose I’m using a specific tool (such as a brush/parallel pen/etc.) to achieve a certain aesthetic. In that case, I still draw the skeleton of the lettering using a pencil and then fill it out and tweak it using tracing paper and the specific tool I’ve decided to use for the project.
Then, it’s a matter of deciding whether I want to keep it on paper or go digital. If it’s the primer, I do a final hand-lettered version and call it a day.
If it’s digital, it most likely means begrudgingly opening up Adobe Illustrator, with maybe some light texture work in Photoshop if the concept of the lettering piece calls for it. But most of the time, I am a minimalist, and I love pure black/white/grayscale lettering.
What resources or tools have been most helpful in enhancing your lettering skills?
As far as tools go, this question depends on what you, as a lettering artist, are comfortable with. As mentioned earlier, I love paper and pencils/sharpies/crayons/brush pens. To me, the connection between your brain, your eyes, your hand, and the drawing tool is the purest there is—allowing you to express your unfiltered thoughts.
Resources—too many to choose from. I have a library of lettering and design books, ranging from old typography specimens to newly published collections of lettering pieces.
Online, you can explore work from a plethora of lettering artists or follow numerous accounts on social media that showcase lettering & typography.
There are workshops, tutorials, and classes—nowadays, it’s almost too easy to get inspired, stay inspired, and refine/improve your craft.
How did you transition from lettering as a hobby to making it a sustainable business?
To be fully transparent, I never went into lettering thinking that it would be my full-time business. I am a graphic designer first and foremost, and while I love lettering, I chose to make it part of my design arsenal rather than let it replace my logo work, packaging design, editorial layouts, and any other projects I work on.
However, if there is an opportunity, I try to introduce custom lettering to every project. It could be something small, like custom drop caps, a hand-lettered monogram to accompany a brand as part of an overall branding system, or any other number of applications you can think of. So, in a way, my lettering is a hobby that I happen to do professionally.
Can you discuss the role of community and networking in building your lettering business?
The community has become such an integral part of what I do! I was honoured to be accepted into several Typism books before I was asked to be a speaker in 2019. I’ve met many people in person that I initially only knew online.
Living in NYC and CT, there are so many typographic and design events that one can go to and meet other like-minded designers, lettering artists, type lovers, and creatives from all walks of life.
I’ve made some lifelong connections via an online forum for the (now defunct) HOW Design Magazine and some of those people have been my close friends for over two decades.
I’ve met people at design and lettering workshops who have become a support group of sorts—they are the ones I can share my work with, who can share their work with me, and you’re always guaranteed some insight, feedback, and nuggets of wisdom that help us improve our work constantly.
Having those connections is vital to me as a creative, and they fulfil the need for the social aspect of the job when we’re stuck behind a screen with nobody else in near physical proximity with whom we can chat.
Community is essential, yet you don’t need to have thousands of people in your circle, just a handful of great ones.
Can you share a success story or milestone in your career that you're particularly proud of?
There have been two highlights of my career so far. One has been publishing a book called Ambigrams Revealed. It was a book I wanted to design and publish for the ambigram community, and it contains dozens of ambigrams and case studies from artists all around the world.
While there are very few ambigrams of mine in the actual book, I designed the entire book from start to finish, in addition to collaborating with another designer on the book cover.
The other milestone is having an animation company reach out to me via email to create lettering for a secret project, only to find out shortly after it started that it was creating lettering for the closing sequence of the Marvel movie Thor: Love and Thunder.
Working on the project was a whirlwind of sketches and meeting, but it was worth it in the end, as I not only saw my work on the big screen, but I also saw my name in the credits! That was incredible to see and experience.
What future goals or projects do you have for your lettering career, and how are you planning to achieve them?
There are several projects that I would love to work on: getting involved with Red Bull and doing some lettering/ambigrams for one of their stunt projects, getting my work on a Formula 1 car, doing a series of lettering/ambigram pieces for Hollywood movies and their title sequences, and designing a full lettering/ambigram wrap for a high-end car brand.
As far as how I would like to achieve them, the only way I know how is to put my work out there, connect with people working in those companies, cold calls/emails, a lot of hard work, and throw in just a pinch of luck for good measure.

I would love to do some lettering/ambigrams for a Red Bull stunt project, get my work on a Formula 1 car, more lettering/ambigram pieces for Hollywood movies and their title sequences, and design a full lettering/ambigram wrap for a high-end car brand like Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Porsche, Ferrari, Maserati, Bugatti, Audi, or BMW.
