Vera Drmanovski is a Montreal-based lettering artist and illustrator known for her meticulous attention to detail.
Embracing maximalism, Vera believes in the mantra of "more is more." Drawing inspiration from her love of books and nature, she infuses her creations with a unique perspective.
Specializing in collaborations with publishers for book covers and exclusive editions, Vera adds a touch of enchantment to each project she undertakes.
From her freelance studio, she has had the pleasure of partnering with esteemed clients such as Penguin Random House, Audible UK, The Bookish Box, FaeCrate, and OwlCrate.
Can you share a pivotal moment in your lettering journey that significantly influenced your artistic style?
My style emerged from my creative curiosity. Over the years, I’ve been drawn to various styles, techniques, and mediums, experimenting extensively to discover my own aesthetic. I often found myself caught up in what I like to call "shiny object syndrome." Yet, at the heart of my work has always been a love for maximalism—the idea that more is more. Through my experimentation, I learned to organize the chaos of details into cohesive lettering compositions.
Gradually, with dedicated practice, my visual style began to take shape. However, I now view my style as fluid and adaptable. As a commercial artist and designer, my primary goal is to create artwork that fulfils project objectives, which means I frequently adjust my style. If you look at my projects, you’ll notice they vary widely, each tailored to a specific client brief. Despite this diversity, they all share a common thread of storytelling, rich in detail and featuring decorative, floral, symmetrical compositions.
What advice would you give to aspiring lettering artists who are just starting and seeking inspiration?
Experiment freely, and don’t feel pressured to create trendy art—unless you genuinely love what’s in vogue. If that’s the case, embrace it! But if you don’t resonate with current trends, stay true to your own path. It may be less traveled, but it will ultimately lead you to your goals. Cultivate patience, perseverance, and passion along the way.
I wish I could promise you a shortcut to success, but the idea of overnight success is a myth. Be prepared to put in the hard work—aim for those 10,000 hours—and avoid comparing yourself to others. And remember, don’t let the social media game discourage you. The numbers don’t define your worth; what truly matters is building meaningful connections through it.
How do you approach continuous learning and skill improvement in your lettering practice?
I love this question because learning should never stop! When I first began my journey in lettering, one of the key ways I learned was through long-term personal projects, and that continues to be true today. Personal projects are the best way to learn, experiment, and push your skills. They allow you to fail, learn, and discover your interests, passions, and inspirations.
Success in a personal project doesn’t necessarily mean going viral or attracting dream clients. True success is measured by your progress, with the goal of building a portfolio that showcases your abilities to potential clients. Throughout my lettering journey, I've completed five long-term personal projects and numerous short-term ones, some of which span several years. Initially, I dedicated time to them daily or weekly, but now I fit them in whenever I can.
Regardless, there’s never a time when I don’t have an active passion project underway.
Can you share an example of a project or challenge that pushed you to grow as a lettering artist?
A few years ago, I wanted to break into the publishing industry, but my portfolio lacked any book cover projects. I had an old, worn-out collection of nine Hermann Hesse books that didn’t look great on my shelf, so I decided to redesign the entire collection. I created new dust jackets and designed a beautiful binding box to give it an exclusive feel.
This project pushed my skills significantly, as I needed to create a cohesive and unified look for the entire collection. I chose to work in Blackletter style, which intimidated me at first. However, through this process, I learned a great deal about the various Blackletter lettering styles and how to adjust them for better legibility for modern readers. This project ultimately led to my first book cover with Penguin Random House!
How did you transition from lettering as a hobby to making it a sustainable business?
When I discovered lettering, I was working full-time as a graphic designer, creating marketing collateral for Reward & Recognition corporate events. It might sound boring, but it was actually a fantastic opportunity! While building my lettering skills, I started incorporating them into my day job, testing my ideas in a real-world setting from the very beginning. This approach allowed me to treat my hobby like a legitimate job early on and prepared me for my freelance career.
I learned how to develop lettering concepts based on briefs and apply them across various mediums, from printed materials, small and large scale, to animated presentations and videos. When it was time to transition into freelance work, it felt more seamless since I had already been working on lettering projects for clients for years. The challenging part was figuring out how to shape this into the kind of business I truly wanted. That required some soul-searching and experimentation to identify where I belonged and to define my niche for a thriving business.
Working with a business coach was invaluable in this process, and I consider it a worthwhile investment.
Can you discuss the role of community and networking in building your lettering business?
Being in love with this profession created a bit of a bubble when it came to human connection. I wasn’t fortunate enough to know people in person who shared my interest in lettering, so the online community became my lifeline. Through it, I discovered my “Lettering Ladies,” a group of seven amazing women who have become dear friends over the years. We started as an Instagram chat group to support and encourage one another as we began our lettering journeys. Today, we all have successful businesses and continue to cheer each other on.
I can always count on them for help or advice, whether creative or business-related. That personal connection is invaluable. I also love being part of larger lettering communities like Typism, which brings together like-minded individuals.
The Typism community, in particular, has been incredibly supportive and inclusive. It has given me opportunities to be featured in Typism books and speak at Typism Summits, which led to building my confidence and expanding my network. Thank you, Dominique!
How do you manage your time and stay organised with multiple projects and commitments?
Time management skills and project management software are essential for organizing my schedule. I find it crucial to have everything visually represented in a calendar, allowing me to see my timetable and avoid potential conflicts and overlapping deadlines. For me, this also means taking on fewer projects but prioritizing those that are better paid. This approach frees up my calendar and allows me to dedicate my full attention to each project.
Maintaining clear and open communication with my clients ensures I have enough time to bring their visions to life. Additionally, using pricing packages has helped me manage scope, alleviating some of the pressure that comes with tight deadlines.
What future goals or projects do you have for your lettering career, and how are you planning to achieve them?
For some time now, I've wanted to diversify my income by creating educational content for aspiring lettering artists and illustrators. Investing in my own learning has been invaluable for my career, and I’d love to give back to the community. In the coming months, I plan to dedicate time to developing a course and a workshop.
Dream Project or Collaboration
Here’s a truly ambitious dream project: designing an entire space for a large bookstore chain—a cozy book nook, if you will. This space would be filled with book-related art, featuring everything from quotes to themed artwork, including large-scale murals and small ephemera. It would be a welcoming environment where people can relax, read, and enjoy their coffee.
